Well it was that time of year on Thursday – the annual fund raising garden party. After weeks of glorious weather what could possibly go wrong? The night before our area had thunder and lightening and we woke to grey skies – but we are the WI and nothing dampens our spirits for long. By 11.00 there were a few of us gathered with our sleeves rolled up at our President’s house where the party was to be held. Tea urns at the ready, we sliced and diced cucumbers and strawberries (well we had to have lots of Pimms didn’t we!), sliced and plated cakes. Rob, President Gill’s lovely husband, had baked over a hundred mini pastry cases to make strawberry tarts, lemon meringue tarts etc as well as mini eclairs and tiny bite sized sponges. Sandwiches and sausage rolls were bought by various volunteers as well as more cakes. Cream was whipped for scones, jam and strawberries. The rain came, and cleared, and came again.
Guests arrived, well over 60, many from WI’s around the district. Bring and buys were brought and bought, raffle tickets sold, endless jugs of Pimms made and drunk, food was eaten until not a loaf was to be found in the house or the neighbour’s house (our treasurer’s home). Rain came and went, along with sunshine, until everything was eaten, coupious amounts of tea had been drunk and the raffle drawn. Laughter and chat had filled the air, drowning out the chirping of birds usually heard in the garden!
Finally the last guest departed, pots, cups and plates washed. Crumbs were gathered up and the time came for weary helpers to depart – in the now glorious sunshine.
Just a few pictures taken. Early in the procedings, just before the guests arrived Gill looked at the kitchen floor, got the hand brush and shovel and got down to brush the floor – you have never seen WI members move so quickly to grab phones and take photos, preferably of the rear view – with friends like these – what more can I say!
A great time had by all. Cannot wait for next year – but hopefully with better weather. Thank you to all those attending who made it such a fun event.
